March 30th 2011 just after the renovation work had begun. While most of the below waterline timber was in pretty good condition, apart from the need for re-caulking, the rest of the hull was in desperate need of a major repair.
The top board below the gunwhale was rotten pretty much all around the boat due to the seal between the toe-rail and rubbing strip having failed, allowing moisture to enter and create havoc. The damp timber had also invited borer to set up home and devour what the rot hadn't. It was a depressing discovery, much worse than I expected. The local boatyard declared it a disaster and said it was uneconomical to repair, so it became time to develop some DIY skills!
